The aerosol_cci project runs over three phases of each about 1 year duration.
Phase 1 comprises of the specification work and in-depth analysis of various aerosol retrieval algorithms. The specification work leads to issueing the User Requirements Document (revising the underlying GCOS requirements) and the Product Specification Document together with the Data Access Requirements Document. The in-depth analysis of various algorithms is based on technical workshops to analyse the differnt concepts and common modules. Then various algorithm versions are implemented with harmonized or improved modules / auxiliary datasets for aerosol optical properties, cloud masking, and surface treatment. For selected data covering a typical range of environmental conditions comparisons to external ground truth (as far as available) is made. With each algorithm version one month of global data (September 2008) is processed and analysed with existing valdaition tools versus AERONET /GAW sun photometer ground truth and compared to other satellite data (MODIS, POLDER standard, ...) as well as model datasets (AEROCOM median, MACC-AER forecasts). Phase 1 concludes with a round robin exercise (for 4 months of 2008 - one in each season: March, June, Septemebr, December) to compare various algorithms for identical and different sensors and form the basis for decisions on modules and algorithms to be selected for the further project.
Phase 2 starts with the selection and decision process on best performing modules, algorithms and combinations to produce high quality aerosol information from European sensors and added value in terms of complementary information content. On this basis protoytpe algorithms will be implemented (based on the scientific pre-cursor algorithms).
Phase 3 is dedicated to the production of one full global annual dataset (2008 and 1997 with predecessor instruments) and the valdiation and climate research related assessment of the ECV products.
