In response to the GCOS requirements the aerosol_cci project will focus on four major elements:
- understand the differences between various products
- integrate major aerosol European retrieval groups
- focus on ENVISAT and other European aerosol products
- work with the AEROCOM community as primary user
The first major step of the project is to quantify and better understand differences, strengths and weaknesses of the available algorithms by a round robin exercise and dedicated case studies in order to subsequently consolidate and improve them. With this exercise elements for "community algorithms" will be defined where appropriate and combined or synergetic products will be developed where feasible. One major outcome of the aerosol_cci project is to make the provision of quantitative error information (validation of annual datasets and pixel-wise uncertainty). An improved global aerosol ECV datasets covering at least one year (2008) will be assembled and validated at the end of the project.
The primary products concerned in the aerosol_cci project are level 2 (daily 10km and 50km pixel products) and level 3 (aggregated monthly gridded datasets) multi-spectral AOD and associated probabilities of pre-defined aerosol types for a number of European satellite instruments (ATSR-2, AATSR, MERIS, POLDER, GOME, SCIAMACHY, OMI, GOME-2, AVHRR/3); stratospheric aerosols are observed with GOMOS (and tested for SCIAMACHY).
